Motorhome parking in rainy weather – what now?

Motorhome parking in rainy weather – what now? - stellplatz.info

As much as motorhome enthusiasts enjoy having all the reins in their hands thanks to this form of travel, it cannot be denied that this control reaches a rather harsh limit, at the latest in Petrus' sphere of influence - anyone can go to any holiday destination Spending time on every pitch, the weather can conspire against you and take on forms that are not suitable for holidays - not only, but especially with kids, creativity is required so that there is no rampant boredom in a small space.

1. Plan ahead

Hardly any motorhome trip is taken out into the blue. The trick is to simply pay even greater attention to what alternative excursion options are available at the destination in case the weather doesn't cooperate. These could be, for example:

  • Fun parks/indoor playgrounds (trampoline, climbing, etc.)
  • Indoor swimming pools / thermal baths
  • Museums
  • Cinemas
  • Amusement parks
  • Castles, palaces, etc.

If you have around ten such options up your sleeve per pitch, that's more than enough and you always have an ace up your sleeve, even during long periods of bad weather.

2. Tablet & Mobile Phone

Of course, you can just sit in the motorhome and surf Facebook etc. for a whole rainy day - but that's not particularly fun, especially given the fact that the Wi-Fi coverage on many pitches leaves more than to be desired.

Nevertheless, the electronic helpers can be useful as a distraction in many ways, namely if you convert them into a game console. The currently most popular games for Android and iOS are:

  • RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic (Economic Simulation)
  • Super Mario Run (Jump 'n Run)
  • Pianista (similar to Guitar Hero)
  • Bully (Third Person Adventure)
  • Retro Winter Games 1986 (sports game remake)
  • Minimize (puzzle game)
  • LVL (3D puzzle game)
  • Don't starve – Shipwrecked (survival adventure)
  • Galaxy on Fire 3 (space simulation)
  • Xenaroid (space shooter)

The disadvantage of these games, despite all their finesse, is that they can only keep one person busy. If you want multiplayer games, you have to resort to things like Minecraft, Trivial Pursuit & Friends or Worms 2. These can then be played either together or at least in turn, so that several people can be kept busy.

3. Classics completely new

An old motorhome rule says that no holiday equipment is complete without a box with a collection of games - and even in our modern, electronic world this sentence is still fully valid - because board and board games are, first and foremost, completely independent of the Internet. or power supply and can be played by candlelight if necessary.

And they captivate not just one person, but the entire family, bringing them together and letting them “weather out” the rainy weather together instead of being a group of individuals staring at their screens.

What belongs in a game collection is usually decided by the manufacturer. In any case, this includes:

  • Man, don't get angry
  • Trickle
  • mill
  • lady
  • Chess
  • Card game

What speaks in favor of these classic games is, above all, the low price - good quality brand collections don't cost 20 euros. However, these games can also become boring in the long run - but that shouldn't speak against board games in general, as dozens of new ones are still brought onto the market every year.

Board games like Beat the Raab, Taboo, The Settlers of Catan, Risk, Monopoly or the Axis & Allies series are a lot more expensive than the classics, but have a very high excitement factor and a variety of scenarios ranging from skill to knowledge strategy - although due to their complexity they are sometimes not necessarily suitable for preschool children.

Nevertheless, they are also a great and, above all, communal pastime - and as such are useful not only in bad weather, but also on “normal” evenings in the motorhome.

4. TV & DVD

Of course, there is still the possibility of surviving extended periods of rain in front of the good old TV. There are several options available:

  • TV reception via satellite antenna
  • Connecting a DVD/Blu-Ray player
  • Using a media hard drive via USB

If there is also fast, strong WiFi on the parking space, it would of course also be possible to stream films via Amazon, Netflix and Co.

However, you should definitely pay attention to the equipment in your motorhome - if the devices are to run autonomously, they have to make do with the 12-volt on-board voltage and then only have a limited operating time as long as the battery lasts. Of course, commercially available devices can also be used on pitches that have a power supply.

In line with the changed viewing habits, it is also advisable not only to concentrate on classic films when selecting your “schedule”, but perhaps even to give preference to series. On the one hand, these have the advantage that the individual episodes are shorter, meaning they can be watched in more doses than a two-hour film. And on the other hand, series have a much longer total playing time - so they are sometimes enough for one or even several days. Not least thanks to the fact that producers today pay extremely close attention to long-lasting suspense, even a DVD box with a series can get you through even longer periods of bad weather.

5. Compact factor e-book

For motorhome-traveling bookworms, there couldn't be a better invention than the e-book. Simply for the reason that entire libraries can be stored on them without taking up more space than a travel guide and with the weight of two bars of chocolate.

It is precisely for this reason that an e-book reader with a selection of books from various genres is almost a must for a motorhome - also in view of the fact that the inexpensive models such as the Amazon Kindle are based on the principle of "electronic paper". only use power when a page is rebuilt - i.e. "turned".

In addition, practically all new publications and most of the bestsellers from previous years are now available in electronic form - as well as a whole mountain of literary classics, which are often available to download completely free of charge. There are no restrictions compared to paper books either in terms of selection or readability. On the contrary, many older motorhome owners will even benefit from the fact that e-book readers allow you to adjust the font size and line spacing.
