Do motorhome parking spaces need to be monitored?

Do motorhome parking spaces need to be monitored? - stellplatz.info

We asked ourselves whether surveillance through video cameras or other measures is an issue at motorhome parking spaces. After all, according to our data, only around 6% of the parking spaces are guarded. A survey we conducted showed that there is no need to expand surveillance. So good for everyone involved, right?

Vandalism: nothing to worry about

Our survey, which went to 3,515 parking space operators, explicitly asked about experiences with vandalism and possible consequences. We also wanted to know whether the places are guarded and whether a specific incident was responsible for this. The results of the survey surprised us positively. At 78.26%, almost four fifths have not had any negative experiences with vandalism. Of these, 8% have installed a video camera or taken other surveillance measures. Even the almost 22 percent who have already experienced vandalism in the broadest sense do not describe any horror scenarios. Only 10% of this group see video surveillance as necessary. Overall, the survey showed a generally cautious picture regarding the need to monitor the parking space.

The top incidents that aren't top at all

If an incident was reported to us in the course of our research, it was usually a break-in or theft. With 6.5% of all motorhome parking spaces, this fact was mentioned most frequently. Almost 4% had problems with actual vandalism, mostly at night. Destroyed fences and cameras, trampled supply and disposal stations and other damage were described. Finally, the garbage problem was mentioned, which is certainly a problem for several parking spaces. Only 2.2% would have to regularly clear the parking space of rubbish. We will look into this again in a future survey. At this point, not only the “top 3” incidents end, but the entire list. We weren't told anything more.

Monitoring – who benefits, who loses?

Since the number of RV parks with surveillance is manageable, it can be concluded that the few incidents are not due to surveillance. It cannot be said that more surveillance measures will lead to less vandalism. So why set up a camera or hire a security guard? Given the small number of problems, the investment of over 1,000 euros for a good monitoring system should be questioned. It is clear that the feeling of security, especially among motorhome owners, can be increased through monitoring. For those campers who want to spend the night on a pitch without being filmed, “no” can also be explicitly selected for the “guarding” property. Only those 763 mobile home parking spaces that have actually selected this information appear here as a result.

In conclusion, it can be said that vandalism is not an escalating problem for parking space operators and there is no trend towards more monitored locations.
