City exploration to Jena - campsite “Unter dem Jenzig”

City exploration to Jena - campsite “Unter dem Jenzig” - stellplatz.info

The "Unter dem Jenzig" campsite on Jena's green belt is located at the foot of the Jenzig mountain, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the city as well as for cycling and hiking along the Saale or up to the Jenzig. From the square you can easily reach the sights and locations in and around the city of Jena on foot or by bike, thanks to the well-developed network of cycle paths.

In 1558, the Alma Mater Jenensis was founded, which would soon become one of the most famous places of study in Germany. During their stay in the city, the university graduates, who came from half of Europe, learned of a total of seven curiosities that were considered evidence of their actual presence in Jena, but were kept secret from the public. A verse written in Latin from this time, which lists the seven miracles, reads: “Ara, caput, draco, mons, pons, vulpecula turris, Weigeliana domus, septem miracula Jenae.” Uninitiated people could not guess the meaning of this saying. With this unusual means, the university protected itself from impostors and fraudsters who could have damaged the university's reputation.

In addition to the historic Gothic town hall (1377–1413) with the Schnapphans, there is also the Göhre, in which the city museum is located, on the historic market square. On the market square there is a monument to Johann Friedrich I the Magnanimous, the founder of Jena University. In Jena he is also called Hanfried.

Jena

The Seven Wonders of Jena (Latin septem miracula Jenae) are seven sights in the Thuringian university town of Jena, five of which still exist:

Caput – the Schnapphans figure on the town hall clock

Every hour on the hour, the Schnapphans (Hans von Jena) at the town hall grabs a golden ball on a stick held by a pilgrim standing on a pedestal to the left of the clock. The ball is supposed to represent one of the famous Thuringian dumplings. A legend says that Jena would sink if he could catch him. To the right of the clock there is an angel holding a bell in his hands in front of his body. This figure moves on the quarter hour strike. The original Schnapphans can be seen today in the city museum. A copy “snapped” at the town hall today. Only the very gaunt (hungry) head of Schnapphans can be seen at the town hall. Caput is the Latin word for the head.

Draco – the seven-headed dragon

A dragon statue (Latin: Draco, the dragon) with seven heads, four legs, two arms and four tails was probably made as a joke by Jena students at the beginning of the 17th century, using animal bones, wire and papier-mâché; Draco can now be admired in the city museum.

Ara – the altar underpass of the city church

One of the seven wonders is Ara, an arched passage under the altar of the city church, which was then the only access to the Cistercian monastery founded behind this church in 1301. The passage has a height of 3.5 meters and a width of 3 meters. This architectural curiosity in church building is very rare.

Mons - the mountain “Jenzig”

The mountain (Latin: Mons) means the most striking mountain in Jena, the Jenzig, a 385 meter high limestone mountain with a striking bald spot, the so-called nose.

The palaces and castles along the Saale bear witness to the rich history of this region. Medieval spectacles regularly take place at the Leuchtenburg near Kahla, the Dornburg castles attract visitors with their well-kept gardens and their dramatic location high above the Saale valley, and Großkochberg Castle contains evidence of Weimar Classicism. Romantic castle ruins can be discovered on some mountain ridges.
