The area is particularly suitable for cyclists, mountain bikers and hiking. In just under an hour you can walk to the Zabelstein castle ruins with its observation tower and a panoramic view of the Franconian countryside. Below the Zabelstein lies the hamlet of Neuhof with its Bogenschuss Parkur and the adventure farm. On hot days you can cool off at the natural swimming lake "Gipssee" near Donnersdorf. The restaurants in Falkenstein and the neighboring towns are ideal for your physical well-being. A special experience is a wine tasting at Falkenberg or working in the vineyard.
For day trips, you can consider the cities of Gerolzhofen, Volkach, Würzburg, Schweinfurt or Bamberg with their many sights. Thanks to the excellent cycle path network and the proximity to the Main cycle path, you can also easily reach these destinations by bike.
Vineyard: Donnersdorfer Falkenberg
The Falkenberg is probably the most beautiful vineyard in Franconia. The many vineyard houses are characteristic of this. You can easily hike and enjoy nature on the paved paths between vineyards, hedges and meadows. If you need even more exercise, you can climb the Zabelstein from Falkenberg via various hiking trails. The Falkenberg is also part of the Steigerwald panoramic hiking trail between Bamberg and Bad Windsheim.
Viticulture
In Falkenstein, a small, idyllic district of Donnersdorf, the Dörflein family runs their wine-growing business in one of the most beautiful vineyards in Franconia, the Donnersdorfer Falkenberg.
The small vineyard plots with their approximately 50 vineyard houses exude a special charm. The vineyard lies in the area of the Steigerwald wine panorama and between the charming cities of Würzburg and Bamberg. The vineyards nestle in the sun-drenched foothills of the Steigerwald below the Zabelstein. At a height of 489 meters, it is an ideal destination for hikers and cyclists.
Viticulture has been practiced in the family for the fourth generation. The grape varieties Bacchus, Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner and Acolon are grown.
Through painstaking manual work, the winery ensures that they can harvest healthy, sunlit grapes. These form the basis for fruity and expressive wines. Modern cellar techniques such as cold fermentation help ensure that the quality from the vineyard can also be felt in the glass.
