Description of the environment:
The “Northeimer Seenplatte”, created by gravel mining, covers an area of around 360 hectares and currently consists of 12 artificial lakes. At least three more will be added. Various subsequent uses were assigned to the lake district area through a landscape framework plan and several development plans with green space planning plans.
The task of further gravel mining is the renaturation and redesign of the landscape, which has been fundamentally changed by the extraction of raw materials. The overall plan is based on Prof. Hedergott's proven planning concept from 1958 on the coexistence of nature and leisure. In addition to the areas intended for gravel removal, there is a division into areas intended for leisure activities, nature conservation and fish farming. The water surface of the largest lake, which will extend to around 160 hectares when fully developed, brings the lake closer to the city. There are already a variety of leisure activities here, such as hiking, swimming, sailing, surfing, diving and fishing. Nature-loving visitors, on the other hand, have the opportunity to discover the unique “Northeimer Seenplatte Waterbird Reserve” as a protected habitat for flora and fauna. It initially consists of three lakes, later four lakes.
The lake district is already an essential part of Northeim's cultural and leisure life. On the occasion of international sports competitions, sailing and surfing regattas, thousands of visitors from near and far come to the lake and the city.
A large lawn for sunbathing, a specially designated bathing area and changing facilities are available for bathers at the gravel lake. The eight clubs based at the Kiessee concentrate on the areas of sailing, surfing, fishing, water rescue and model ship driving: Angelsportverein Northeim e.V., Northeimer Wind-Surfing-Club e.V., Northeimer Segelclub e.V., Segelgemeinschaft Northeim e.V., Windsurfing Klub Südniedersachsen e.V., Schiffsmodellbauclub Northeim e.V. , SSP Private jetty rental, DLRG local group Northeim.
A special windsurfing beach is designated and is easily accessible from the parking lot at the north harbor. The “Seeterrassen” restaurant has been offering pedal boat rentals since summer 2010.
