Europe's most popular motorhome pitches: stellplatz.info Award 2026

For the eighth time, stellplatz.info has awarded the most popular motorhome pitches in Europe. The basis: over 7.8 million genuine guest reviews. From more than 17,000 pitches in 42 countries, the 50 best pitches in Europe were determined.

The top 3 of the year:

(You can find all the award-winning spots at the very bottom of the blog post!)

Evaluation basis & selection criteria

The places were awarded based on the following transparent criteria:

  • At least 100 reviews (Google, Facebook, stellplatz.info etc.)
  • Average rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
  • At least 5 reviews directly on stellplatz.info
  • Submission of ratings in the last 3 years
  • Manual editorial review by the stellplatz.info team

The result: an independent, free award based purely on guest opinions.

What's moving the industry: Feedback directly from the parking spaces

Many of the award-winning campsites provided insights into their daily operations, their guests, and their development as part of the award process. Here is a selection of the most interesting feedback:

How has the typical camper changed?

The answer is similar across all countries: Camping is becoming more spontaneous, self-determined, and conscious. The "An der Rügenbrücke" caravan site in Stralsund observes that travel decisions are now often based on the weather: Many guests set off spontaneously and simply drive to wherever the sun is shining.

At the same time, individual stays are becoming shorter but more frequent. Campingpark Erfurt sees this as a clear trend towards short breaks and, as a city camping specialist, benefits directly from it. The vehicle landscape is also changing: Skiveren Camping in North Jutland, Denmark, observes that caravans are increasingly being replaced by motorhomes, whilePielachtal Camping in Lower Austria perceives self-converted vans and roof tents as a growing segment.

What remains constant is the longing for peace and nature. Ammeråns Fiskecamp AB in central Sweden describes it perfectly: their guests seek the luxury of simplicity – feeling immersed in nature while still being well looked after. Wi-Fi is no longer an extra. The Eichhälderhof in Baden-Württemberg puts it succinctly: "Guests are more likely to ask for Wi-Fi than for a toilet."

Investments: Focus on sustainability and digitalization

The award-winning operators are investing, but prudently. A clear focus is emerging: sustainability. Campingpark Erfurt is working towards the goal of self-sufficient power supply with solar thermal energy and a new photovoltaic system. ThePreetz motorhome park in Schleswig-Holstein is switching to kWh-based electricity billing and will install a solar system this season.

Pielachtal Camping in Lower Austria is also focusing on digitizing all processes: paperless registration, online bread ordering, and a guest information portal have been introduced in the last two years. At the same time, funds are being invested in comfort and the overall experience: Skiveren Camping has upgraded its playground, trampoline park, and beach café and is planning a wellness area. At the An der Rügenbrücke caravan site in Stralsund, accessibility is the next concrete goal.

Many operators emphasize that it doesn't have to be a large-scale project. Continuous small improvements that preserve the character of the square are more important to them than spectacular renovations.

Online booking: arrived, but not alone

Online booking has long since arrived in the European campsite market.Pielachtal Camping draws the clearest conclusion: "Online booking is no longer an option." Galå Fjällgård in northern Sweden directly links online booking with reach: visibility on camping portals is now just as essential as the booking function itself.

Nevertheless, the telephone hasn't lost its role. The caravan site at the Rügen Bridge in Stralsund describes the current situation pragmatically: those who want to come should be able to book in the way that suits them best. Ammeråns Fiskecamp AB turns this into an active brand promise: modern accessibility via telephone, WhatsApp, and SMS combined with personal, unbureaucratic service. Skiveren Camping offers its own incentive: guests who book directly through their website receive up to a 15 percent discount.
