Italy knowledge for motorhome owners

To ensure your motorhome holiday in Italy is perfect, here's some important information: Tolls are charged on almost all motorways (approx. 7 cents/km). Be sure to observe the ZTL zones in cities; these are restricted traffic areas, usually located in city centers (fines range from €80 to €330 per entry). Wild camping is generally prohibited (fines range from €100 to €500) – but according to stellplatz.info, over 800 pitches await you in stunning locations.

Important regulations: Congestion charges apply in Milan (€5), Bologna (€6), and Palermo (€5) – as of summer 2025. Limited traffic zones (ZTL zones) are automatically monitored. If parking spaces are located within these zones, be sure to request an entry permit in advance! Average costs: €25 per night per vehicle at a motorhome parking area, toll Munich-Rome approx. €45, diesel approx. €1.75/liter. All prices are as of summer 2025. Best time to travel: May to September to truly experience the Italian summer and the Mediterranean climate. Those who prefer cooler and more secluded conditions will find moderate temperatures and fewer tourists in April and October. Winters in Italy can be cool and wet – the further south you travel, the more pleasant the winter months become.

€15-50 depending on region and equipment

Campsite prices in Italy vary between €15 and €50 per night . Basic pitches in Piedmont start at €12, while premium pitches on Lake Garda can cost up to €50. The average price is €25 for a well-equipped pitch with electricity and basic sanitary facilities.

Beware of ZTL zones

Many Italian cities have ZTL zones (Zona a Traffico Limitato) that are closed to motorhomes without a permit. Automatic cameras monitor entry, and fines range from approximately €80 to €330 per entry. Tip: Your motorhome site can usually obtain a temporary entry permit for you.

Generally prohibited

Wild camping is prohibited in Italy and is punishable by fines of €100-€500. Strict enforcement is carried out, especially along coastlines and in tourist areas. Exceptions are only made in specially designated areas in Abruzzo and Apulia for a maximum of 24 hours.

Approximately 7 cents per kilometer

The motorway toll is approximately 7 cents/km and depends on the vehicle class (number of axles/height). Additional fees apply for the Brenner Pass (€13.50) and city tolls in Milan (€5), Bologna (€6), and Palermo (€5). A trip from Munich to Rome costs approximately €45 in tolls.

April to October, ideally also May-June and September

The best time to travel is from April to October . May-June and September-October are ideal due to moderate temperatures and fewer tourists. In the height of summer (July-August), temperatures can exceed 40°C. Southern Italy and the islands are also attractive in winter.

Over 200 dog-friendly places

Italy offers over 200 dog-friendly campsites with designated exercise areas, dog showers, and information on dog beaches. You'll find particularly well-equipped dog-friendly campsites along the Adriatic coast and in rural areas.

Usually possible in the off-season

During the off-season (March-May, September-October) , spontaneous travel is usually possible without any problems. During the peak season (June-August), popular campsites are often fully booked, especially around Lake Garda and in Tuscany. Advance booking is recommended.

South Tyrol and Tuscany are ideal for beginners

For beginners , South Tyrol and Tuscany are particularly suitable due to their good infrastructure and well-developed campsites. As a novice, avoid the narrow coastal roads of the Cinque Terre and the mountainous regions of Calabria.
